On Friday, August 29, the Guidance Department of Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School held an orientation meeting to welcome the Class of 2007. Over 325 students attended.
The program was opened by Felice Solomon, director of guidance. The theme for the ninth grade is the transition from middle to high school. Solomon emphasized to the students that the guidance department will be meeting with them all year long to insure that this transition will be a smooth one.
Michelle Equinda, Student Government vice president, welcomed the freshman class. She encouraged them to become a part of the school by taking advantage of all the activities that POBJFKHS has to offer and attending a Clubs Fair on October 3, where they will have the opportunity to sign up for any activities that interest them.
Guidance Counselor Neil Lasher led a panel discussion of sophomores and juniors addressing many of the questions the new students had. Members of the panel included Sam Ellner, Robert Eslick, Jared Glass, Katherine Grund, Justin Medwin, Stacey Rosen and Mallory Spector. These students spoke to the freshman about the differences between middle and high school, getting involved in activities, lockers, school sports, activities and clubs, and the importance of good time management.
During a question and answer period, the guidance counselors reviewed student schedules, agendas, building maps, the bell schedule, attendance and school rules and procedures. After the program, students had the opportunity to tour the school, and familiarize themselves with their classrooms and lockers.
