About 20 years ago, Lorraine and I got tickets to a show called Lenny. It was about Lenny Bruce, the comedian who got into big trouble with the law about his use of dirty, blue, obscene, filthy, suggestive and/or vulgar language in his nightclub routines.

The police arrested him many times and fined and imprisoned him many more times. Sometimes more police were in the audience than paying patrons. It did not stop Lenny Bruce and the more they harassed him, the bluer he got. This took place in the 1960s - a long time ago.

Eventually Mr. Bruce overdosed himself with a too large dose of heroin.

I bring this up now in the 21st century because there is a movement afoot to be revisionist and to cleanse Lenny Bruce's name. We all know that today there are no holds barred on what comedians and performers say. The 1960s were more prim and proper and Lenny was obviously ahead of his time. In today's world no one would pay any attention to him.

Back to our tickets to Lenny. They were in Row AAA. How could that be? We were sitting inside the arc of the projecting stage on the left side. We felt quite fortunate to be sitting that close and we anticipated a great show with a great view of the action.

When the curtain rose we were flabbergasted! Directly above us was Cliff Gorman (Lenny) on the couch with a nude woman. Lorraine and I felt we were intruding, but it was only a Broadway show.

Today in the theater, anything goes.

The performers can say anything. The First Amendment protects us against censorship.

Just because you are allowed to say bad stuff doesn't mean you should repeat it over and over again.

Hopefully, there still remains something called good taste and proper behavior. There are many wholesome plays on Broadway, but you have to seek them out.

In the classic movie of the 1930s, Gone With the Wind, Clark Gable uttered a mild curse. The censors went wild with outrage. Lenny Bruce in the 1960s went far beyond that. Today nothing is held back.

"The times they are a-changing!"
