At the urging of Nassau County Presiding Officer Judy Jacobs, the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) recently installed several safety improvements along Canterbury Road, a cul-de-sac in Woodbury that abuts the access road from the Seaford Oyster Bay Expressway leading to the westbound Northern State Parkway.

Months ago, Jacobs intervened on behalf of Canterbury Road residents in an attempt to correct a dangerous traffic situation that resulted from the redesigning of the expressway ramps a year ago. At that time, DOT workers cleared much of the foliage, trees and buffer that stood between the expressway ramp and residents' property. Jacobs had asked state officials to place a cement buffer or guardrail on the curve to prevent cars from rolling down the hill onto residents' property, a situation that has happened in the past.
"I am very please that the DOT has responded to the situation on Canterbury Road by not only putting a six-foot fence, but also landscaping the area," said Jacobs.
The State's DOT installed over $38,000 worth of landscaping to replace trees and shrubs that were removed from the clear zone. However, Jacobs expressed concern that the DOT still maintains that a guardrail is not needed for the westbound entrance ramp to Northern State Parkway.
"While I am pleased with the progress so far and I appreciate what the DOT has done, I still urge them to revisit the question of a guardrail," Jacobs added.
According to Michael Stone, a Canterbury Road resident, cars come screeching around the turn and there have been many accidents to date. "Many of the accident victims walk down the short hill to my house and I allow them to call for service," said Stone.
