The Plainview Chinese School and Cultural Development Center, located at 1535 Old Country Road, is still running strong after the opening in September 2000. The Cultural Development Center of Long Island is a non-profit organization dedicated to provide Chinese language and cultural courses to children and adults and to sponsor Chinese cultural programs in the community.

Adult students enjoy an arts and crafts class at the Plainview Chinese Center.

The Plainview Chinese School facility was donated by the Charles B. Wang Foundation and has classrooms, a library, recreation room and a cafeteria.

There are approximately 500 students attending the summer program at the Plainview Chinese School, which Principal Ming-der Chang calls a community center and place for people to gather. There are usually no more than 15 students in a class to allow a good teacher-student ratio.

There are many classes to choose from for both adults and children. The Plainview Chinese School is not just for Plainview residents and also not only for those of Chinese descent. "This school is for Americans too," said Chang.

In addition to teaching classes at the Plainview School, Chang said they also organize seminars with schools, businesses and religious institutions. They have also in the past held guest lectures for groups that are going to China and need a brief course about customs, cultures and some tips for their travels.

The school, starting its fourth year in September, has approximately 40 year-round teachers teaching classes on many different levels. Some classes include: adult arts and crafts, martial arts, art, Chinese Calligraphy, aerobics, painting, origami, dance, music and language classes.

"We want the community to realize this is in their backyard and they should take advantage of the many classes that we have to offer here," said Chang.

Registration is taking place now for classes beginning in September. There are weekend and weekday classes with prices varying with classes. For more information or to register call 753-5616.
