I expected to be bombarded by the Jericho community after the publication of Part I of "The Jericho Petroglyph." It did not happen! Can it be that we on Long Island are too blasé about the past and are much too involved in the present and the future?

Nonetheless I will keep my promise to reveal site, location and description of the Jericho Petroglyph. "The rock on which the designs are found is located at N 40 degree 47', 10'' - W 73 degree, 33' 0'' interpolated from the US Geological Survey, Hicksville, New York Quadrange of 1967 at an elevation of 180 feet above sea level. The site is within the borders of the Town of Jericho, Long Island, NY." (See map) From Selections from NYS Archaeological Association Bulletin 1954-1977.

"The Jericho Petroglyph is carved and pecked on a granite boulder which measures 193 cm from north to south and 152 cm from east to west. It is located on a slightly elevated and nearly circular plateau which is about 45m in diameter. The granite boulder is heavily patinated and has been split into two segments, probably by natural means. The plateau on which the petroglyph sits as well as the surrounding area is heavily wooded."

A description of the carvings is as follows:

"Design number 1 at the top of the stone is that of a left hand. It measures 23 cm long at its maximum length."

"Design number 2 is in the middle of the stone. I interpreted it to be that of a star."

"Design number 3 is a triangular hole that measures 3 cm on each side."

"Designs 4 and 5 are clearly that of an arrow and a bow."

"Summary and Conclusions" (of Edward J. Lenik - March 1976).

"In my opinion the Jericho Petroglyph is of American Indian origin carved probably during the late Woodland Period.

It is clear that three of the designs, namely the hand, star and arrow are found on other petroglyphs in New Jersey and Pennsylvania and appear to be genuine."

There you have it, my readers, a description of a local phenomenon. I wish to thank especially Mrs. Betsy Murphy, the local history librarian at the Jericho Library, who was my source of discovery of the petroglyph.

Have I whetted the adventurous spirit of you closet explorers? Will there be a crowd of hundreds of suburbanites in hip boots with compass in hand surrounding the Jericho Petroglyph? I hope so but in truth, I have my doubts. We are too busy with our adventures in the stock market and in the real estate market. That is true excitement!
