I am writing to you in regard to a recent cover story about Mark Mathabane's visit to the Plainview-Old Bethpage John J. Kennedy High School (Nov. 15, 2002 edition of the Plainview Herald).

I felt that the article did a disservice to the students who worked so hard to make that event happen. Three juniors Scott Cohen, Jeffrey Click and Dave Charles started a new tolerance club in the high school called Students Opposed to Violence and Hatred (SOVAH). In the current times, it has been quite heartening that so many students were drawn to the club and became members.

The participation and interest prompted the boys to try and enlist a prominent speaker to bring interest and credibility to the club and its message. I feel that the article omitted the key component of student involvement.
