Local voters returned incumbents to their seats in Congress, the Senate and the Assembly on Tuesday. (Editor's Note: Please note that these are not final numbers, as absentee ballots had not yet been tallied at press time).
Democratic incumbent David Sidikman defeated Republican, Independent, Conservative and Right to Life candidate Jacqueline Biggio, Green Party candidate Jeffery Peress and Liberal candidate Willie Jones in Tuesday's election. Sidikman received approximately 19,674 votes (57 percent), Biggio approximately 14,308 (42 percent), Peress received 295 votes and Jones received 143 votes. Sidikman was first elected to the New York State Assembly in 1992.
Republican incumbent Donna Ferrara was re-elected to serve her sixth term in the newly reapportioned 15th Assembly District. Ferrara, who was first elected in 1992, received approximately 22,210 votes or 62 percent, defeating political newcomer and Democratic challenger Jim Buonagura who received approximately 9,006 votes (28 percent) and Right to Life candidate George Jung who received approximately 918 votes (3 percent).
The district includes the communities of (or portions of) Westbury, East Meadow, Old Westbury, Bethpage, Syosset, Jericho, Hicksville, Oyster Bay and East Norwich.
Republican incumbent Carl Marcellino defeated Democratic and Green Party candidate Roger Snyder and Liberal and Right to Life Party candidate Paul Nehrich. Marcellino received approximately 23,533 votes (65 percent) while Snyder and Nehrich received approximately 11,432 (32 percent) and 1,181 (three percent), respectively. Marcellino was first elected to the Senate in 1996.
The 5th Senate District comprises the communities of (or portions of) Hicksville, Syosset, Plainview, Oyster Bay and Glen Cove.
In the 6th Senatorial District, Republican incumbent Kemp Hannon defeated Democratic candidate Norman St. George. Hannon, who was first elected to the Senate in 1989, received approximately 61 percent of the vote while St. George received approximately 35 percent. Right to Life candidate Paul F. Callahan received 2,067 votes (three percent) while Liberal candidate Patricia Maher received 528 (one percent). This will mark Hannon's eighth term in office.
The 6th Senatorial District, which was minimally affected by the recent redistricting throughout the state, includes the communities of East Meadow, Hicksville, Farmingdale, Garden City, Levittown, Massapequa and Plainview.
Democratic incumbent Steve Israel, who was also running on the Independent and Working Families party lines, defeated Republican, Conservative and Right to Life candidate Joe Finley and Green party candidate John Keenan in Tuesday's election. Israel received 81,454 (58 percent) of the vote, Finley received 56,784 (41 percent) and Keenan 1,494 (1 percent) of the votes. This will be Congressman Israel's second Congressional term.
The second Congressional District includes portions of Woodbury, Plainview, Jericho, Syosset and Old Bethpage.
In the 3rd Congressional District, Republican incumbent Peter King prevailed with approximately 117,1110 votes or 72 percent. King was challenged by Democrat Stuart Finz, a political newcomer, who received approximately 44,289 votes (27 percent) and Liberal candidate Janeen DePrima, who received approximately 1,433 votes (one percent). This election win will mark King's sixth term in Congress.
The 3rd Congressional District includes the communities of (or portions of) Hicksville, Farmingdale, Plainedge, the Massapequas, Wantagh, Seaford, East Meadow and Levittown.
