Mike Harris, a resident of Old Bethpage, was recently named Atlantic 10 baseball co-Rookie of the Week. Harris has been making headlines recently at the University of Rhode Island where he is currently a freshman.
In his third collegiate start, the standout freshman recently notched the Rams first no-hitter in 18 years against Sacred Heart. It was the first no-hitter for Rhode Island since Tom Messier blanked Murray State on March 13, 1984. Lefthanded-pitcher Harris narrowly missed a perfect game, walking a batter on a full count in the bottom of the seventh. Harris notched 11 strikeouts in the victory.
While attending Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School, Harris was a four-year letterman under coach Mark Collelevari and also selected to the All-Nassau County baseball team during both his sophomore and junior years. During his senior year, Harris was named All-County and elected team MVP. He boasted a 25-3 record over four years as a varsity player. He was also a member of the basketball and soccer team for four years.
Harris, who is the son of Wayne and Laurie Harris of Old Bethpage, is majoring in business at the University of Rhode Island.
