Rachel Epstein, a freshman at Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School, recently organized a sweatpants sale and will donate all proceeds to the 9-11 Fund.
Epstein's kindness dates back to third grade when she, along with two of her friends, organized a food and clothing drive to help the homeless. In fifth grade, she won a Prudential Insurance Citizen of the Year award and a cash prize to be used for college. Also, as a member of Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), Epstein was involved in many fund-raising events.
"I really wanted to help out with the World Trade Center situation," said Epstein. "I felt so horrible about what happened. It is such an immense tragedy and all I can think about is those affected. I wanted to do something to give back. I figured it would be great if I could donate some money. All I do is baby-sit and I don't make enough money to be happy with what I could give. I decided that if I sold things I would be able to get more money."
Epstein contacted Jake's Promotions and they, in turn, donated the 48 pairs of sweatpants, which she designed. The pants are available in red and blue and down the right leg it says "United We Stand" and on the back it says "USA." There are still approximately 15 pairs left, which are selling for $10 with all proceeds being donated. Please contact Terry Epstein at (631) 454-3301 for information on how to purchase the remaining pairs of pants.
"It feels great to do something like this and to be able to help," said a very generous Epstein and her mother agrees. "I am very proud of my daughter, she has always had such a big heart," said mother Terry Epstein.
Once all of the pants are sold, Epstein will donate the money. She now has approximately $300 and hopes to reach her goal of $480.
