Five Mattlin Middle School students rummaged their closets and sold their toys, books and jewelry to benefit the victims of the devastating September 11 tragedy.
School being closed for the Jewish holidays on September 18 and 19, Nicole Betancourt, Sara Rao, Nicole McDonough, Lauren Nimetz and John Paul Montiel all decided to use the two days to raise money. The fifth graders set up a stand on Washington Avenue in Plainview on Tuesday, Sept. 18 and sold their goods to passerbys.
On Wednesday, September 19, the kids asked Trio Hardware, located at 1032C Old Country Road in Plainview's Morton Village Shopping Center, if they could set up their table outside of the store. Trio graciously obliged. Selling the same items, they were there from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.
The fifth graders make a total of $366, which was donated to a fund set-up by Computer Associates who will match the donation bringing the grand total to $732. The money will go to help children affected by the World Trade Center tragedy.
"It was a great feeling for the kids," said proud parent Mrs. Betancourt. "We are all proud of our kids."
