The 10th annual North American Wheelchair Championship 10 Kilometer Race, scheduled to be held on the roads of Farmingdale on Sunday, June 24, 2001, is still almost 10 months away, but plans are well underway to make it even bigger and better than ever - and residents of Plainview-Old Bethpage are at the forefront of helping to make those plans a reality!
Two very important members of the committee that will be assisting race director Nick Katsounis once again in the 2001 race are Greater Long Island Running Club President Mike Polansky of Plainview, and New York State Assemblyman David Sidikman of Old Bethpage. David and Mike got together with Nick at the assemblyman's office last month to get things rolling.
More than four miles of the 6.2 mile course is once again slated to be on the Bethpage State Parkway, and David will be helping the committee coordinate the use of the parkway with the State Department of Transportation and the State Department of Parks and Recreation once again.
"We expect our 10th annual race to once again bring every top wheelchair athlete in the world to Long Island next June, and Assemblyman Sidikman's assistance and the assistance of the good folks from the Greater Long Island Running Club are key elements in assuring the success of the race, observed race director Nick Katsounis. "Our thanks to everyone who was a part of our highly successful 2000 race, and we welcome the help of anyone and everyone who wants to support wheelchair athletics for the 2001 race."
