Shelter Rock Tennis Club will once again host the annual tennis tournament held to benefit the Diabetes Research Institute. The third annual North Shore Sweethearts Tennis Tournament has been scheduled this year for the week of July 23 to July 30, under the sponsorship of D'Amato & Lynch and founding sponsor Marvin & Sons Jewelers.

In light of the new breakthroughs in the treatment of diabetes, support for the event promises to be even greater than in the previous two years. The Diabetes Research Institute is a world class research center. Its demonstrated expertise in the field has been a major factor in the race to cure diabetes through islet cell transplantation.

Shelter Rock Tennis Club is to be applauded for its unstinting support of this cause. As in previous years, the club welcomes spectators, as well as players, to enjoy the activities. There will be complimentary refreshments and beverages throughout the week, outstanding raffle prizes - and admission is free to spectators.

Tournament Chairmen Fred Blumenfeld of Manhasset Hills and Bart Kaplan of Upper Brookville look forward to another successful event. Said Bart, "in the past two years we've raised over $200,000 for diabetes research, due to the combined efforts of a dedicated committee and the generosity of the Shelter Rock club."

Lawrence Kleger of Syosset, director of tennis for Sport Time Clubs and instructor of many ranked junior players, will again serve as the tournament tennis director. Lawrence invites all tennis enthusiasts, of all levels, to enter.

The tournament will feature activities geared toward both players and spectators with competitive play at A, B and C levels of men's and mixed doubles. A new format for women's doubles will be a one-day round robin with lunch in the newly redecorated Shelter Rock dining room. This promises to be a particularly festive day, with raffle drawings and other surprises.

The players registration fee is a $100 contribution and includes all activities. A new event this year should be both entertaining for viewers and competitive for players. It is a pro-am tournament, at $250 per team, featuring pros from the metropolitan area showing their best performance for a truly worthy cause.
