The Mid-Island Y Jewish Community Center (45 Manetto Hill Road, Plainview) recognized the outstanding efforts and accomplishments of its volunteers and staff over the past year at its 44th Annual Meeting held Wednesday evening, June 14.
Volunteer awards were presented to: Laurie Beller of Woodbury for her work with the senior department; Ellen Marks of Woodbury and Roz Schiller of North Massapequa for their help with Tuesday night's divorced and separated groups. Faye Wolfson of Plainview and Helayne Giller of Plainview for their active involvement with the early childhood department and Bob Meth of Huntington for his assistance with the Dolphins Swim Team.
Ari Levine of Syosset was this year's recipient of the Kerry Sarnow Award for his outstanding sportsmanship within the JCC's Youth Hockey League. The Kerry Sarnow Award was created in 1995 by Joel and Linda Sarnow in loving memory of their son who was very involved in the teen hockey program.
Nassau County Legislator and Presiding Officer Judy Jacobs (D-Woodbury) who served as the evening's keynote speaker, presented an overview of the current issues and concerns being addressed by the Nassau County Legislature. She also outlined plans toward achieving the fiscal stability of Nassau County while at the same time maintaining quality of life for its residents. Jacobs represents Legislative District 16, which is comprised of the communities of Plainview, Syosset, Jericho, Woodbury, Hicksville, Old Bethpage and parts of Farmingdale.
The annual meeting also provided an opportunity for the re-election of the following Mid-Island Y JCC board members for a second three-year term: Arthur I. Gordon of Plainview; Mark L. Hankin of Plainview; Scott Levine of Old Bethpage; Milton Sosinsky of Woodbury; and Leonard B. Symons of Plainview. In addition, George N. Rifkin of Plainview was re-elected president for a second one-year term.
