The top runners from all over Long Island headed to Westbury on Saturday, May 13 to compete in the 12th annual Westbury-Carle Place Rotary Spring Sprint, a 5 Kilometer Run that is part of the KeySpan Energy Grand Prix of Long Island Road Races, conducted under the auspices of Long Island Track & Field.
Two runners from Plainview -- John Grossfeld and Lori Harfenes-Melnik -- were especially prominent in the race. John Grossfeld finished in third place in the highly competitive 30-34 age group with a time of 19:54, and Lori Harfenes-Melnik scored as the second finisher in the women's 40-44 age group with a time of 20:13.
Both John and Lori are members of the Greater Long Island Running Club, Long Island's largest running club, and run competitively for the club's racing team.
This is the second year that the Westbury-Carle Place Rotary Spring Sprint has been part of the KeySpan Grand Prix, and KeySpan Energy's Phil Maroney was on hand to present a $1,000 check to Rotary President Ron DiBiasi in honor of the event and to help the Rotary's great program of charitable endeavors.
