Junior midfielder Joe Barile (Plainview JFK High School) scored two goals, including the eventual game-winner, to lead the Hofstra men's lacrosse team to a 10-7 win over UMass in the 2000 season opener on Saturday, Feb. 26 in Amherst, MA.
Barile scored both his goals in extra-man situations. He scored his first tally with 10:51 remaining in the third quarter to break a 5-5 tie, then he added the eventual game-winner 55 seconds into the fourth quarter. He was one of two Flying Dutchmen to score twice on the day. It was the second time in his three years at Hofstra that he has scored two goals in a game.
Came to Hofstra from Pittsford-Mendon High School...played four years of lacrosse and was a member of the downhill ski team in high school...named to the Rochester/Western New York All-Star team as a senior after scoring 57 goals and adding 20 assists...scored eight goals and recorded 14 points in a single game as a senior...named to All-County team as a junior after recording 35 goals and 19 assists. ..tallied 92 varsity goals in his scholastic career which placed him sixth on the Pittsford-Mendon all-time list...received All-County and All-Conference Honors in skiing as a junior.
Hofstra, which reached the NCAA Division I quarterfinals last spring, entered the 2000 season ranked No. 9 in the nation by Face-Off Lacrosse Magazine. The Flying Dutchmen are next in action when they entertain pre-season No. 7 Loyola on Saturday, March 4 at 1 p.m.
