Sharon C.H. Mead, MD, medical director at Central Island Healthcare in Plainview, has been elected a Fellow of the American College of Physicians-American Society of Internal Medicine (ACP-ASIM), the society of internists. The American College of Physicians-American Society of Internal Medicine is the nation's largest medical specialty organization. ACP, founded in 1915 and ASIM, founded in 1956, merged in July of 1998. Dr. Mead's distinction as Fellow recognizes her achievements in internal medicine, as well as service to the medical community and the community as a whole.

An internist practicing in Nassau County for nearly 40 years, Dr. Mead has served as medical director for Central Island Healthcare since February of 1991. During that time she was instrumental in guiding the transition of Central Island from traditional nursing home to serving as Long Island's most active sub-acute provider. The 202-bed facility has referral relationships with all major hospitals on Long Island and specializes in providing in-patient rehabilitative care to individuals immediately following a hospital stay.

In addition to her work at Central Island, Dr. Mead is an attending physician at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, is certified by the American Board of Nuclear Medicine, and has been certified and re-certified in Medical Direction by the American Medical Directors Association. She has been a member of the American Society of Internal Medicine; has served in official positions, including president of the New York State Society of Internal Medicine and of the Nassau County Medical Society and Nassau County Internal Medicine Society. Her dedicated outreach to the community has included serving on numerous committees and boards with a focus on Long Island's healthcare interests as well as chairing the Nassau County Breast Cancer Awareness Committee. "The owners, administration, medical professionals and staff of Central Island Healthcare have the utmost respect and admiration for Dr. Mead. She has served as its medical director for nine years and its patients and residents have benefited greatly from her expertise and dedication," stated Central Island Healthcare Administrator, Martha Sweet, RN, MPS, CNHA.

A graduate of Vassar College, Dr. Mead earned a medical degree from the School of Medicine of the University of Chicago. She completed most of her residency training at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal and finished her training at Nassau County Medical Center and Meadowbrook Hospital.

She has been married for 45 years to James C. Mead, MD, also a practicing internist and longtime member of the American College of Physicians-American Society of Internal Medicine. They have four children and three grandchildren.
