Incumbent County Legislator Judy Jacobs (D-Woodbury), minority leader of the Legislature, is seeking a third term this November in the 16th Legislative District. She was first elected to the seat in 1995, the inaugural year of the County Legislature. She is running with the endorsements of the Democrats and Independence Party.
Jacobs has already received the endorsements of the New York League of Conservation Voters, the Sierra Club, NOW Alliance PCA of L.I., Court Officers Benevolent Association of Nassau County, Superior Officers Association of Nassau County, Citizens for Equal Rights (CERFPAC) and N-SARC Council.
Her activism has roots that go back over 30 years, when she fought on behalf of her community on civic and environmental issues.
Jacobs was the president of the South Woodbury Taxpayers Association. As a civic leader, Jacobs played a vital role in the Plainview Protect Our Water Committee, Save Syosset Hospital Committee and Windsor Chapter of Cerebral Palsy. She also served on the Variety Pre-Schoolers Board of Trustees and was a trustee at Syosset Community Hospital.
Her concern for the environment has been demonstrated by involvement in Syosset Homeowners Against Pollution of the Environment (SHAPE) and Residents Against Garbage Expansion (RAGE), which successfully closed the Old Bethpage landfill.
As a legislator, Jacobs is a member of numerous committees, including Rules, Legislative Budget Review, Capital Planning, and Planning, Development and the Environment. She also serves on the county's Child Care Commission. In the Rules Committee, Jacobs was an active participant in the committee's investigative hearings concerning the county's health insurance cost overruns.
In her past term, Jacobs has proposed varied of local legislation, including a law limiting accessibility of tobacco to minors, a law allowing the Human Rights Commission to investigate cases of sexual orientation discrimination, and a law to ensure open bidding of county land sales.
She is a founding member of Joint Civic Council of the Town of Oyster Bay and is founder and past president of the Woodset Chapter of Women's American ORT. She is currently a member of the Nassau Neighborhood Network and the North Shore Synagogue.
Jacobs is co-manager of a family-owned real estate management company, and a former teacher in the Elmont School District.
She received her BA from Hunter College, where she also did graduate work.
Jacobs has been a Woodbury resident for over 32 years. Married to Sid Jacobs, she is the parent of three grown children - Jackie, Lenny and Linda - and four grandchildren, Aimee, Matthew, Sara and Danielle.
