The Plainview 10-year-old girls team are making town history in softball. This Plainview Little League Williamsport team has won the District 32 championship. The first time in Plainview that the girls have won this prestigious title. "This is the greatest thing that could have happened for Plainview softball. The girls proved that Little League is not just for the boys," said Barry Weiner, manager of the team. The team is now headed into the sectionals with the capturing of their district crown.

The team started their roll with a 15 to 5 victory over Bethpage. Gillian Mann pitched four innings in this 10 run mercy rule win. All the girls played well, and everyone reached base. Colleen Hopkins, the catcher, threw out two runners trying to steal base. Jessica Drebsky had a hit and held the outfield together.

In game two, Ashley Leibowitz pitched six innings and helped her cause with a home run. Samantha Purzack reached base all four times up. Caryn Filonuk was 2 for 3 with a walk. In the 10 to 5 win all the girls contributed with both their bats and their gloves.

Game three was the district championship game against Central Nassau. Rachel Mann was 3 for 4, Erica Shapey reached base and scored all four times she was up. Cynthia Weiner's bat was hot. She went 2 for 3 with one walk. Jaclyn singled to left with a blast to the outfield. Melissa DiStefano provided great defense in the outfield and showed her speed on the bases. Gillian and Ashley pitched very well and held a good team to six runs. The play of Rachel, Cynthia, and Erica in the infield was terrific. Colleen's bat stayed hot and she continued to throw out a few runners trying to steal. The girls did not commit a fielding error in all their games. "They aren't a practice team, but when they get on the field for game time they really turn it on. They love to run bases and create havoc for the opposing catchers," stated manager Barry Weiner. This is a team that roots for each other. They have an amazing amount of concentration, effort, and pride.

Plainview can be proud of these young ladies. They represented the town well both on and off the field. The parents did a wonderful job cheering on the girls. Coaches Mike Shapey and Rob Purzak helped Barry prepare the girls for competition. Keep going girls, do your best.
