Music can be food for the soul, particularly live music presented in a setting of beauty, reverence and elegance. And that is the setting for Music in the Cathedral, a series of concerts and recitals presented at Garden City's Cathedral of the Incarnation. Located on Cathedral Avenue, just a few blocks from the Garden City Hotel, the lunchtime musical presentations have been outstanding and wide ranging. Presented as an offering to the community, Music in the Cathedral is for everyone who has an interest in good music.

Lasting only one half hour on Thursdays, the musical interludes begin at 12:15 p.m. Soloists from all over the metropolitan region and Long Island have participated in the programs. As I said at the outset, the Cathedral, as a setting for music, could not be better. Voices and instruments can fill the structure with tones and a vibrancy not to be found in an ordinary theater.

Over the next several weeks, you have the opportunity to listen to more outstanding recitals. On April 29, there will be an appearance by the Garden City High School Wind Ensemble. Following, on May 6, will be soprano Marie Sic-Drohan of St. Joseph's Parish in Babylon. And several other events are scheduled through the end of May.

Beyond the Thursday recitals, Music in the Cathedral will present a special commemoration for Memorial Day on Monday, May 24, from 1 to 3 p.m . Featuring the Celebration Brass and organist Robert Ludwig, patriotic songs and popular festive music will be performed. There will also be a sing-a-long for everyone to engage in. And on Sunday, May 9, at 4 p.m., stirring voices of the New England Spiritual Ensemble will echo through the Cathedral. According to the Boston Globe this group's performances bring "...a hush to the hall..." whenever they perform.

None of these performances can happen without substantial financial support and numerous volunteers. For example, ushers are always needed at the concerts. There is also a requirement to maintain the music library and help in publicizing all of the upcoming events. If you would like to help out, just call the Cathedral Music office at 248-5704 to offer your services or just to obtain more information. Of course, your financial support is also very welcome. And after hearing one of the recitals, I know you will want to be supportive.

Take time out of your schedule to attend one of the musical events at the Cathedral. You will be absolutely delighted if you do!
