The entire net proceeds of the Greater Long Island Running Club's annual Long Island Police Appreciation Run are turned over to a special fund that is dedicated to helping local police officers and their families in times of emergency. Thanks to the support of Syosset-based run sponsor David Lerner Associates and of all of the runners and walkers who have participated in the run each June, the club has been able to provide support to the families of many Long Island police officers and their families in time of need.

The latest recipient of monies from the fund was the family of Nassau County Police Chief Richard Baribault. Sadly, Baribault suffers from ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), and requires constant care and specialized equipment that his family simply can't afford. This 26-year veteran of the NCPD, and dedicated runner and member of the Nassau Police Running Club needed help, and GLIRC was pleased to be able to provide it.

At GLIRC's January general meeting, GLIRC Police Appreciation Run Director Ira Eskow, a resident of Woodbury, and David Lerner Associates Vice President Bill Mason presented a $2,500 check for the Baribault family to NCPD detective (and Nassau Police Running Club Vice President) Brian Dunker and Lawrence W. Mulvey, from the office of Nassau County Police Commissioner Donald Kane.

Everyone is cordially invited to help GLIRC continue its efforts by being a part of this year's Long Island Police Appreciation Run on Thursday evening, June 3. For more information, call 349-7646.
