A study recently conducted by the Plainview Water District shows that water usage by residents has decreased significantly since 1980, even though the number of services provided by the water district has increased during that same time span. According to Bernard Chetkof, chairman of the Plainview Water District Board of Commissioners, since implementing a highly aggressive water conservation campaign in 1989, water usage has decreased by approximately 10 percent in the Plainview community.
"We are extremely pleased with the results of our water conservation efforts over the past decade," stated Chetkof. "Our consumers have been extremely receptive to watching how and when they use water, and it has shown in our pumpage statistics. I would like to personally thank our consumers for cooperating with the district in these efforts, and I want to emphasize that we will continue to promote the importance of water conservation in the future."
Among the community outreach efforts utilized by the Plainview Water District, is the opening of its doors to local Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Brownie troops for a tour of the district, an opportunity to watch an informational video on the need for water conservation, and a Q & A session with one of the water district commissioners. The water district has also played an integral role in curriculum development on water conservation with the Plainview-Old Bethpage School District.
