What do Long Island runners look for in a race? They want an accurately measured and well marked course, free of traffic and other distractions. As we move into the fall racing season, they generally look for fast, flat courses with a minimum of turns, so that they can get a real feel for how their training is going. They want accurate and quick results, generous post-race refreshments. Finally, of course, they want to see the proceeds of the race dedicated to a worthwhile charity.
With all this in the computer, the Vytra Human Race 5 Kilometer Run, to be held at Heckscher State Park Sunday morning, Sept. 13, may be the perfect race -- and one that is certain to attract a very large turnout of runners and walkers from all over Long Island.
The 5 Kilometer course has been designed by David Katz of Finish Line Road Race Technicians to be as fast as possible. The Heckscher State Park venue is the flattest course possible, and the race will be run entirely within internal park roads that will have been cleared of all other traffic to ensure a totally safe and uncluttered environment for the runners and walkers. Scoring will be via the new ChampionChip system that ensures quick and accurate results. Race management will be by the Plainview-Old Bethpage Road Runners Club, Long Island's largest running club, who will be exerting every effort to maximize the amenities provided to every entrant, including a spectacular, top quality T-shirt for everyone who enters.
The entire net proceeds will be turned over to United Cerebral Palsy of Nassau County, Inc., to help that organization's dedicated staff provide services to over 1,800 children and adults with a broad range of disabling conditions.
The Vytra Human Race 5 Kilometer Run is being sponsored by Vytra Health Plans, as part of their continuing community outreach program -- devoted to improving the quality of life on Long Island by promoting physical fitness and good health. The Long Island State Parks region is also a major support of the event.
"This is a race that is specifically designed by runners, for runners," observed Road Runners Club Vice President Mindy Davidson. "We know what runners want in a race, and we intend to make every possible effort to see that they get it!"
The starting gun for the Vytra Human Race 5 Kilometer Run will go off promptly at 9 a.m. on Sept. 13. There will also be a 1/2 mile fun run for the youngsters at 8:30 a.m., and a giant health fair taking place before, during and after the race.
