Junior second baseman Tom Wigand of Plainview was named the Mid-Continent Conference Newcomer of the Year after helping the C.W. Post baseball team to a first place finish in the Mid-Con East Division.

Wigand ended his junior season with a .294 batting average, 10 home runs and 48 runs batted in. He became just the seventh player in school history to have 10 home runs in a single season, and was the first player in the last five years to have more than one RBI per game (48 RBIs in 42 games).

Wigand was a key part of a team that finished with a 12-2 record in conference play (21-21 overall). The Pioneers finished the regular season 5.5 games ahead of the second place finisher (Youngstown State) in the Mid-Con East Division. Wigand was also named to the Mid-Continent Conference First Team at his second base position.

In addition to his All-Conference honors, Wigand was named to the All-Mid Continent Conference Tournament team after a spectacular showing in C.W. Post's two games (a 12-11 loss to Western Illinois and a 12-5 loss to Oral Roberts). Wigand tied a tournament record by hitting two home runs against Western Illinois and added a third home run in the loss to Oral Roberts.

In fact, Wigand nearly single-handedly carried the Pioneers to a win in the Western Illinois game on May 7. After hitting a solo home run in the fifth inning, the Plainview native stepped to the plate with the Pioneers trailing 11-7 in the eighth and drilled a three-run homer to cut the lead to 11-10. He then added an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to tie the score at 11-11 and force extra innings. Unfortunately, Western Illinois scored the game-winning run in the top of the tenth, and C.W. Post was unable to answer in the bottom half.

Wigand, who carries a perfect 4.0 grade point average as a criminal justice major, attended Nassau Community College for two years prior to attending C.W. Post.
