Across Long Island a record number of budgets were supported by voters on "Super Tuesday," May 19, and nothing was different in the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District. Of the 3,482 total votes cast for the budget, 2,375 votes, or 68 percent, were in favor of the budget¬an extraordinarily large margin of voters saying "yes" to the proposed budget.
"The more significant aspect of tonight's results is not simply that our budget passed. This is a vote of confidence in our school district by the community," commented Dr. Anthony Cavanna, superintendent. "We are all working well together for the benefit of the students in a responsible and prudent manner and it is apparent that the community wants us to continue moving in that direction."
In addition to the budget passing, the district held board elections. Three at-large seats were up for election, those of board members Alicia Kabak and John Scarpa and Board President Ginger Lieberman. Lisa Leblang was elected with 2,322 votes; Cathy Shapp was elected with 1,908 votes; incumbent Alicia Kabak was re-elected with 1,744 votes. Ginger Lieberman received 1,652 votes and Alan Borko received 1,047 votes.
The new board members will be sworn in at the reorganization meeting this July when the board will elect its president and vice president for the 1998-1999 school year.
