Junior second baseman Tom Wigand, a Plainview resident, ended the 1998 regular season on fire for the C.W. Post baseball team. Wigand hit 7 for 14 with two home runs, two triples and eight RBI as the Pioneers took three out of four from neighboring New York Tech on Saturday and Sunday, May 2-3.

Wigand hit both of his home runs in a 12-1 win in the second game of the series on Saturday, May 2. Over the course of the weekend, Wigand had a slugging percentage of 1.214 and raised his RBI total to a team-high 42 through 40 games. In fact, in conference games, he has driven in a whopping 23 runs in just 14 contests.

Wigand's efforts this season have helped the Pioneers to a first place finish in the Mid-Continent Conference East Division. The Pioneers, who are 21-19 overall and 12-2 in the Mid-Continent advance to the conference tournament, which will be held from May 7-10 at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, OK. C.W. Post opens the tournament with a noon game on May 7 when they take on Western Illinois, the third place team from the West Division.

If the Pioneers win the Mid-Continent Conference tournament, they will advance to an NCAA play-in series against the champion of the Midwestern Collegiate Conference for the right to go on to the Division I tournament.
