Rabbi Julius Goldberg, 72, of Plainview, senior rabbi of the Plainview Jewish Center, died on Jan. 30, 1998. Born in Manhattan he received his bachelor's degree from the College of the City of NY and his master's in Hebrew literature from the Jewish Theological Seminary. He was ordained a rabbi at the seminary in June 1953. He earned his doctor of divinity in May 1980.

Rabbi Goldberg served in Cranston Jewish Center, RI, where he was also cantor, principal, teacher and torah reader. He came to the Plainview Jewish Center in 1957 overseeing the building of the new synagogue. He served as chaplain at Central General and Mercy Hospitals. He was a member of the board of governors, the NY Board of Rabbies and the board of trustees of the Mid-Island YM-YWHA in Plainview. He was president of the LI Board of Rabbis and vice president of the Rabinical Assembly of Nassau-Suffolk and the Commission on Synagogue Relations, part of the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies.

Rabbi Goldberg is survived by his wife Bette; his children, Rabbi Mordechai (Jill), Dr. Harry (Maureen); and Rachel of Plainview; his grandchildren, Chana Yitzchak, Ephraim, Ruchama, Joshua and Benjamin; his brothers Dr. David and Sam; and his sister Etta. Services were held at the Plainview Jewish Center.
