The intersection of South Oyster Bay Road and North Service Road in Syosset is so dangerous according to Nassau County Legislator Judy Jacobs and her constituents, that people who live on the nearby residential streets are practically trapped. Fortunately, the county's Department of Public Works agrees with Legislator Jacobs' idea to remedy the situation.
Legislator Jacobs (D-Woodbury) alerted the Office of Traffic Engineering on behalf of constituents for whom it is nearly impossible to make a turn out of their community because there is rarely a break in the traffic.
"Between the southbound traffic on South Oyster Bay Road and the traffic on the North Service Road for the Long Island Expressway, those who live on residential streets are like prisoners who can't get out," said Legislator Jacobs. "It is very difficult for someone to pull out of this area because there are few breaks in the traffic. No one should have to take a deadly risk just to make a simple turn."
In response to Legislator Jacobs' call for the installation of a "no turn on red" to ease the traffic situation, the Commissioner of Public Works indicated in a letter that a work order has been issued.
According to the commissioner, the installation of the sign "reduces potential conflicts between northbound motorists who would have a turn arrow indication and southbound motorists attempting the right-on-red maneuver in order to travel west on the North Service Road and create additional gaps in traffic for area residents wishing to egress Abbey Lane, which is approximately 200 feet west of South Oyster Bay Road."
