The weather report on Thursday, May 27 was calling for afternoon thunder and lightning. At Mitchel Field for the final game of a three game series to determine the Class ‘B’ Nassau County Softball Champions, the only thunder was from the bats of the Lady Baymen. All the lightning came from the mound as Kerry Apicella pitched a complete game shut out, racking up 12 strike outs along the way.
On Monday of the week, the Lady Baymen lost the first game of the series to the Carle Place ‘Frogs.’ Oyster Bay kept hope alive on Tuesday by squeaking out a victory with a walk off home run hit by short stop Joshlyn Grant.
With the championship on the line in Thursday’s game, both teams came ready to play. It was a pitching duel with both pitchers throwing a perfect game into the fourth inning. The Lady Baymen were playing without their starting catcher, Maddie Howes, who was out due to an ankle injury. Freshman Danielle Agostinello suited up behind the plate and caught a great game. In the top of the fourth, Keri Bongiovanni got on base and was followed by Kerry Apicella who hit a home run to straightaway center field.
In the sixth inning OBHS left fielder, Jillian Boccia started a rally with a hit. Kaitlyn Madden and Joshlyn Grant got on base and Keri Bongiovanni, who was 3 for 4 on the day, brought the runners home with a stand up double and later scored.
In their last at bat, Carle Place mounted a comeback attempt. They loaded the bases. The first out came with a play at the plate. Kerry Apicella settled in and struck out the last two batters protecting her shut out and securing the championship title for the Lady Baymen.
Oyster Bay was scheduled to face Babylon in the Long Island Championship game to be played on June 8 at Nanuet High School.
