Often in the game of football, the defensive players get overlooked for the high-profile players, like quarterbacks, running backs, and wide receivers. A week ago Newsday singled out an OBHS Varsity defensive player as a “Player to Watch.”
In the first game of the season played Saturday, Sept. 19, at Memorial Field against the Rams of Clark High School, Matt Comack certainly lived up to the title. Clark came to town as the clear favorites to beat the Baymen. Our 2009 Baymen thought differently.
Matt Comack was impressive in the season opener with 4 sacks and 9 tackles. Matt’s teammates rose to the occasion. John Gotti scored the winning touchdown and quarterback David Grant rushed for 91 yards including two touchdowns. Sophomores Phil Mihlstin and Blake Meyer came up big as well. Blake Meyer made two pass receptions late in the fourth quarter to move the Baymen to the 3-yard line which set up the winning touchdown.
The Baymen won by a score of 20 to 19. The one point differential came down to a kickers’ duel. Phil Mihlsten made two of his three extra point attempts while the Rams made only one of three. Phil also intercepted the Clark QB in the last seconds of the game at the goal line to seal the victory.
A match-up that saw three lead changes in the last four minutes of play made it one of the most exciting games in Baymen history.
The next home game will be held on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. under the lights against Carle Place.
