OB-EN PAL Martial Arts Program ‘Gets Its Kicks’ By Helping Others

Students kick to raise funds for PAL scholarship program

The 13th Annual Oyster Bay-East Norwich Police Activity League (PAL) Kick-A-Thon was held at the Atlantic Steamer Fire Company on March 4. The event was held to raise money to fund the program’s scholarship fund in order to provide students with the opportunity to participate in the program, despite economic hardship.

All PAL sport programs are highly beneficial to their participants by instilling a positive work ethic, determination, patience, tolerance, and respect for themselves and others. In addition, the program provides a safe environment for physical activity, competition, and personal growth.

Sifu Andrew Hall, program instructor, bases the students’ martial arts training on the foundational concepts of the Tactical Solutions for Defense (TSD) Martial Arts system, a system founded by Sifu Michael Grüener.  TSD not only promotes discipline and well-being, but provides students with the tools to protect themselves in real-life scenarios.

The Kick-A-Thon began at 4 p.m. in the meeting room of the Atlantic Steamer Fire Company firehouse and continued for one hour. In only 60 minutes, 38 martial artists completed a total of 130,429 kicks. Though there were 10 fewer kickers this year, the group performed admirably against last year’s total of 144,514 kicks.

The number of kickers did not affect the total amount of money raised, with a total of $4,122.25 collected. These funds will provide many students with the opportunity to continue their participation in the program and their pursuit of martial arts studies.

This event was such a huge success thanks to the efforts of event organizers and PAL parents: Jordan Masiakos, Bernice Paone, Barbara Panariello, Ann Melnyk, Lorraine DiFiglia, Colleen Sabatello; and Vicky Walsh; the unwavering support of the Atlantic Steamer Fire Company members, and through generous donations from our community merchants: Mimi Tans, Carvel of Syosset, La Boulangerie, It’s Greek to Me, Taby’s, Saggio’s, Christina’s Epicure, Supercuts of Syosset, Eastern Martial Arts Supply, East Norwich Dry Cleaners, For You Nails, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Chloe Nail Salon.

The success of this event will continue to provide opportunities to bring many children into the OB-EN PAL Martial Arts Program, where they will not only learn to become martial artists, but they will also learn how to develop their role as outstanding citizens within their community. Thank you to one and all!
