If you were anywhere near Center Island Beach on Sunday, May 3, you might have wondered why the beach was so crowded on a rainy foggy day.
The beach was the site of the The Long Island Scholastic Regatta: The Regatta was sponsored by the Sagamore Rowing Club (the Crew Club of Oyster Bay). They were host to over 900 rowers from 26 clubs and schools all over the Tri-State Area.
Contestants competed in various events from single sculls, to quads, and the ever impressive Varsity eights. While rain might have dampened the atmosphere, many rowers actually prefer to row in the rain, it cools them off, and also makes the water much easier to row.
Troy Smith, coach of the crew club of Oyster Bay and chairman of the regatta, was quoted as saying that "Despite the rain this was one of the best regattas we have ever run."
