Dooley Roosevelt Memorial Race Held

On Aug. 4 the Sagamore Yacht Club held this year’s Dooley Roosevelt Memorial Race. This event, which honors Julian K. Roosevelt, who was an Olympic sailor and a member of both Sagamore and Seawanhaka yacht clubs, is held alternate years by each club.

Volunteer To Help Paralyzed Surfers At Wheels2Water Event August 12

Individuals who haven’t surfed in years due to spinal cord injuries that left them paralyzed will be able to get on to surfboards at Long Beach thanks to an organization called Wheels2Water. Dozens of volunteers are needed to help paralyzed surfers out of their wheelchairs and onto specially designed surfboards. The Wheels2Water event takes place starting at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 12 at National Blvd. in Long Beach. Interested volunteers should contact Anthony Testaverde at 516-729-1061. A second event is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 23 at Lido Beach.

Weather is always the subtext for a safe boating trip

Anglers down in the Gulf remember this tragic event: three friends, two of them NFL players, lost after their boat capsized during a fishing trip in March 2009. A fourth was rescued after clinging to the hull in 63-degree water for almost two days. As an offshore angler, you would never want to find yourself unprepared in such a desperate situation. If fishing takes you far offshore, make sure you know your limits.

Get advanced training. Boating education is widely available and includes classroom and online training offered through the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary (USCGA), United States Power Squadrons (USPS) and state boating agencies. Advanced training in navigation, seamanship, boat handling and weather are important to know before you venture into open waters. Local knowledge and recommendations from experienced captains who run offshore fishing charters can be valuable as well.

OB Public Hearing On Current Laws And Regulations For Boating Safety

August 8 meeting in town hall will be conducted by Senator Marcellino

The July 4th capsizing of the Kandi Won resulting in three fatalities in Oyster Bay Harbor has focused attention on boating safety. Senator Carl L. Marcellino, along with members of the Senate Standing Committee on Investigations and Government Operations, will be holding a public hearing to examine the current laws and regulations on boating safety in New York State and whether changes are necessary to protect the public on our waters. The hearing will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 8, at 11 a.m. at the Town of Oyster Bay Hearing Room, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay.

Senator Marcellino was recently contacted by the family of Victoria Gaines, the young girl who tragically lost her life in the Oyster Bay July 4th boating accident, to enlist his help in ensuring greater safety measures on New York waters. They want to create Victoria’s Law in her memory.

Leonora Petrina of New Zealand (and now Bayport) scored as the overall winner of the 29th Annual Runner’s Edge Long Island Women’s Run on July 14, as a record field of 455 runners, walkers and wheelchair athletes crossed the finish line on the track at Farmingdale High School. It was Petrina’s third consecutive win in the event.

Top local finishers included Jean Bohan of Oyster Bay, who scored in 19th place overall and second in the 40-44 age group, and Jeri Cavagnaro of Locust Valley, who won the fifth place award in the 65-69 age group.

Benefit for the Matthew Fetzer Foundation for children with cancer

On June 16, Sagamore Yacht Club hosted the 13th Annual Friends of Oyster Bay (FOB) Race and Post Race Party for the benefit of the Matthew Fetzer Foundation — which helps children with cancer.

The Matthew Fetzer Foundation in Bayville is a charity founded by the parents of Matthew Fetzer, a young child who succumbed to the ravages of cancer. It was through the years of his valiant battle that his parents came to realize that so many children were in this same situation, battling for their lives, and were losing whatever little childhood they could have.

Mangano to Host Free Family-Fun Children’s Day at Eisenhower Park

Nassau County will host “Children’s Day” on Sunday, July 22, from 4 until 7 p.m. at Eisenhower Park, sponsored by Bethpage Federal Credit Union. Admission is free.

From 4 until 6 p.m., children of all ages will be able to enjoy a variety of activities including carnival rides (ages 2 - 8), bouncy houses (ages 3 -15), face painting and arts and crafts. Beginning at 6 p.m., Plaza Theatrical Productions will be performing Cinderella at the Harry Chapin Lakeside Theatre.

OB Girls U9 Soccer Team Wins First Place

The Oyster Bay Lady Owls U9 Girls soccer won first place in the LIJSL Green Division. The Division Champions finished 9-1-1 overall and 8-0-1 in league play. The girls trained hard all season and were a real improved team from last season. The team was trained by Jenny Roehrig of ISA and coached by Manny DeFreitas, Eddie Reilly and Brad Wieboldt.
