Fourth Graders Go ‘On The Road’

As part of the East Woods fourth grade curriculum, the students went on four field trips to various Long Island destinations … and one field trip came to them. Although the weather didn’t always cooperate (Hurricane Sandy, chilly temperatures), and the destinations weren’t always open as scheduled (Fire Island Lighthouse, Sagamore Hill), the fourth grade students and teachers persevered and enjoyed exploring the history and beauty of Long Island.

The various trips and lessons learned were documented throughout the year by the students and culminated in a wonderful re-telling of their adventures. At the one-room Nassakeag Schoolhouse in Stony Brook the children traveled back in time and experienced life as students in the late 1800s.

When the Theodore Roosevelt Traveling Trunk Show came to school, the students were taught about Theodore Roosevelt’s childhood and early life through pictures and replicas of items he would have used.

The trip to the Joseph Lloyd Manor in Lloyd Harbor showed the students how children and their parents lived in the mid-1700s.

The much-anticipated overnight trip to Caumsett State Park in Lloyd Neck focused on ecology and team-building. The last trip of the busy year was to the 18th Century Epenetus Smith Tavern in Smithtown where the students learned about the Revolutionary War and the importance of taverns during this time in history.

The fourth grade class did a wonderful job of bringing their hands-on experiences to life for their audience of fellow students, faculty and parents. Special thanks for all of their hard work and dedication goes to East Woods fourth grade teachers Danielle Rosenthal and Patricia Butt.
