Last weekend was wonderful, maybe especially because of the snow. The joint spaghetti dinner hosted by the Italian-American Citizens Club and the Oyster Bay Historical Society was a lovely event. People sat around chatting in the beautifully redecorated Italian-American clubhouse on Summit Street. They have done a wonderful job!

On Sunday, Feb.21, we were on a pilgrimage to find out more about the Theodore Roosevelt Last Will & Testament and went – of course – to Sagamore Hill National Historic Site. While we didn’t find a copy and/or mention of the will in the amazing assortment of material they have on the president, we were thrilled to see the Visitor’s Center a hotbed of activity.

Mystery Picture Remains a Mystery

Billy Minicozzi guessed that the mystery picture of two Adirondack chairs was taken at the Sagamore Yacht Club (a good guess, but not on the mark). On a sports note he wished good luck to the American women’s and men’s hockey teams playing in the Olympics in Vancouver, Canada. “I hope they win the gold,” he said.

There is a lot of good news being generated by the young people at the Oyster Bay High School. The Oyster Bay High School Foreign Language Honor Society put on a spectacular concert to raise money for the Haitian relief effort on Tuesday, Feb. 9 in the Oyster Bay High School Performing Arts Center (the PAC). Big Shot was performing. They are a premier Billy Joel tribute band. They raised over $11,000 for Haiti earthquake relief.

The Oyster Bay High School Varsity Basketball team did wonderfully at the semi-finals against Locust Valley played at SUNY Old Westbury. They won the semi-final on a 35-foot shot with less than one second to go in the game.

They will be playing in the finals at C.W. Post this Saturday evening, Feb. 20, at 8 p.m. Now that is the place to be on Saturday night, wearing purple and gold. Great good luck to the Baymen!

A Great Weekend in Oyster Bay

Friday, 12 February 2010 00:00

It was a great weekend in Oyster Bay. The snow didn’t come but it did cancel the Oyster Bay-East Norwich School District budget presentation. It was re-scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 23. [That left Saturday morning free for some of us.]

Raynham Hall Museum held its fabulous fund raiser at Planting Fields on Feb. 6, and Rebecca Finelli, co-chair said, “It went well. Most people liked having it at Planting Fields Coe Hall mansion. It’s a lovely place and has a romantic atmosphere which went with the theme of the event – Valentine’s Day. We were delighted to have Barbara Ernst Prey as our honoree. She has been a very generous supporter of the museum for quite a while. She is a lovely individual, and a friend of Raynham Hall and we thought it was a great year to honor her.”

The problem with information is that it may be out there, but you sometimes really have to work hard to find it.

The Oyster Bay-East Norwich Board of Education members determined last year that they would vote on the salary increase of the Superintendent of Schools, the Assistant for Curriculum, and the Assistant for Business at the July 7, 2009 re-organization meeting – after the school budget vote had passed.

Mystery Picture Remains a Mystery

Billy Minicozzi said the Mystery Picture in the Jan. 28 issue of the Enterprise Pilot was the Town of Oyster Bay 9/11 sign in Oyster Bay. That is not correct. [On a sports note he said the last time the Jets won the Superbowl was in 1969. The Mets won that year too and what was interesting is that they both won while playing in Shea Stadium. He said there was no Giants stadium in 1969. The Jets beat the Colts that year he said.]
