Captain William H. Sembler, of Glen Cove, formerly of Bayville, died on Nov. 11, 2010 at age 86. Husband of Florence for 59 years. Father of William, Richard, Frederick, Donna and the late Robert. Grandfather of eight. Great-grandfather of one. He was a WWII Merchant Marine veteran, a master mariner and a professor of marine transportation at SUNY Maritime College, Fort Schuyler for over 30 years. Visiting was at the Funeral Home of Dodge-Thomas, Glen Cove. Mass at St. Hyacinth RC Church, Glen Head. Interment St. John’s Cemetery, Queens.
Carl Bernard Larsen, proud veteran of WWII, formerly of Queens and Bayville, passed away on Oct. 8, 2010 in Annapolis, MD, at the age of 85. Beloved husband of Margaret (nee Morris) Larsen, father of Carl B. Larsen (Tulinda) and Kim Larsen (Jim Etkin). Treasured grandfather of Bryce Larsen, Jenny Larsen and Abe Etkin. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Waterman First Class aboard the aircraft carrier USS Bon Homme Richard in the Pacific Ocean and was a member of the Fleet Reserve, Annapolis. Memorial services were held Nov. 27 at Seawane Golf and Country Club, Hewlett Harbor, NY.
Carmen J. Melillo, 84, lifelong resident of Oyster Bay, died on Nov. 11, 2010. Husband of the late Celia. Father of George Melillo (Rose) and Carmen Jean Melillo. Grandfather of Nicholas James and Joseph Allan. Also survived by nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was the oldest living member of the Italian Mutual Aid Society of Oyster Bay, founder of Oyster Bay Clam Bar, past commander of American Legion Quentin Roosevelt Post #4 and a devoted WWII veteran and Purple Heart recipient. Arrangements were made by the Oyster Bay Funeral Home. Funeral service was held in the funeral home chapel, Rev. Kevin Smith, Pastor of St. Dominic’s RC Church officiating. Interment at Locust Valley Cemetery.
James, Virginnia Lorraine was born Aug. 17, 1939 to the late Henry and Rebecca James. Lorraine was born and raised in Oyster Bay and graduated from Oyster Bay High School in 1957. After graduation, Lorraine worked for Doubleday Book Co. in Garden City until it closed. She then began working at Shelter Rock Public Library where she became head of Circulation Services and retired in 2004 after 39 years. She was also a member and officer of the New York Library and Nassau County Library Associations.
Helen E. Strausser, 82, of Bayville, died on Nov. 8, 2010. Wife of the late Monroe. Mother of Marilyn Krantz (George) and the late John. Grandmother of Katie and Sam. Sister of Caroline Warren.
