Obituary: Ralph K. Smith Jr.

Longtime Locust Valley and Glen Cove resident Ralph K. Smith Jr. passed away Aug. 23, 2011. He was born in Ambridge, PA, and graduated Sewickley High School in 1942. He entered Dartmouth College, enlisted in the Army in 1943, joining the 63rd Infantry Division. He received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for heroic achievement in action.

After a semester at Shrivenham American University in England, he returned to Dartmouth, graduating in 1948 Phi Beta Kappa, magna cum laude, and president of Delta Tau Fraternity. He entered Harvard Law School, served as president of the Chancery Club and graduated in 1951. Since that time he practiced law, concentrating on charitable trusts, estates, foundations and not-for-profit corporations.

Adelaide “Adi” L. Beatty of Oyster Bay, NY, died July 23, 2011. She was a graduate of Friends Academy, Locust Valley, NY; Pine Manor College, MA, and Bucknell University, PA. Adi did her post grad studies at the New School for Social Research, NY, and was a Retired Dir. of Development at Mt. Holyoke College. She had a long and successful career in fundraising, was an avid sailor and active member of the Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club. She is survived by her late brother Frank W. Beatty II’s children: Frank W. Beatty III, Brooke Beatty Wallace, Winifred Beatty Brunsickle, and a loving family of friends and her beloved “Molly” and “Kit Kat.” Arrangements were handled by the Oyster Bay Funeral Home and the burial service was held at the Matinecock Cemetery.
