Nicholas Labella died at the age of 77, of a sudden, massive heart attack on Saturday, September 17, doing the thing that he loved the most, talking to a group of people at the Theodore Roosevelt gravesite at Youngs Memorial Cemetery. Nick was born in Oyster Bay on September 8, 1934.
His wife Mary said he loved TR and was a great defender of his life. Whenever someone said something that lessened him, Nick would research the issue and respond to clear up the record. He was the superintendent of Youngs Memorial Cemetery and could have retired but he loved talking about TR, she added.
Jody Hawthorne, 52, of Elmont, died on Sept. 8, 2011. Son of Dolores and the late Evertt Hawthorne. Brother James, Jay and Jeffrey. He was a graduate of Oyster Bay High School. Funeral services entrusted to Oyster Bay Funeral Home. Interment private.
Barbara Weiler (nee VanZile), 73, of Bayville, died on Sept. 8, 2011. Wife of Jack F. Weiler. Mother of Patricia Weiler and the late Jack R. Weiler. Grandmother of Lauren Weiler. Sister of Patricia Flower. Arrangements were made by the Oyster Bay Funeral Home. Memorial service was held at the Village Church of Bayville. Interment Locust Valley Cemetery at later date. Florence “Aunt Flo” DeFelice, 94, of Astoria, died on Sept. 8, 2011. Aunt of Martha Amici (Robert), Fred Abate (Rosemary), Marco Torelli (Patricia), Louis Cazzola (Linda), John Torelli (Susan) and the late Mary Snopkowski (Dan). Also survived by many great-nieces and nephews. Arrangements were made by the Oyster Bay Funeral Home. Funeral Mass at St. Dominic’s RC Chapel. Interment Mt. St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Kenneth A. Voorhest, of Syosset, died on Sept. 8, 2011 of Syosset. Husband of the late Frances. Father of Betty Jean (Carl) Cisar and John (Mary) Voorhest. Grandfather of seven and great-grandfather of 12. He was a Syosset Fire Department Benevolent member who also served as its first dispatcher, a job he held for 25 years. Peter H. Stehli, 78, of Oyster Bay, died Sept. 2, 2011 peacefully, after a long battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis. The son of Grace and Henry Stehli, he spent much of his childhood in Locust Valley and Bayville near the beach that bears his grandfather’s name. He attended GreenVale and Buckley schools and graduated from St Paul’s School, Concord, NH, and Yale University in 1955. After serving in the U.S. Air Force he received an MBA from NYU.
Gil Rabal, of Locust Valley, died on Sept. 1, 2011 at age 91. He was a WWII Army veteran, serving in the Battle of the Bulge. Husband of the late Dolly Catherine Rabal. Father of Nancy Warner (Dan) and Ronald. Brother of the late Celina. Grandfather of Christina and Sterling. Great-grandfather of Boyd and Cody. Service at Dodge-Thomas Funeral Home, Glen Cove.
