Obituary: Frances Rousmaniere Storrs

Frances Rousmaniere Storrs, of Oyster Bay, died April 22 peacefully at home at the remarkable age of 100. Her charitable life began in 1929 at the age of 16, when she worked for the summer in Hyden, Kentucky, where her mother’s family had funded the Frontier Nursing Service three-room hospital, and rode horses through the back hills to help provide medical care. For the rest of her life, she devoted much of her energy to helping others through a multitude of charities, including Planned Parenthood, Visiting Nurse Services, the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Boys and Girls Club, the Oyster Bay Waterfront Center, Friends of the Bay and many others. She and her husband Richard (“Dick”) were leaders in creating Oyster Bay’s East Woods School in 1946 and she served the school for many years. Her inquiring mind led to travel all over the world, plus regular courses at Long Island’s Hutton House even into her nineties. “Frinnie” graduated from Chapin School in New York City and was one of Chapin’s longest-serving Class Secretaries. From its purchase in 1956 to 2013, she opened her home in Cove Neck to all, welcoming anyone who asked to use the house for a fundraiser or wedding.

Evelyn McNamara, formerly of Oyster Bay, passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 7, 2013 at her son Steven’s house in West Milford, New Jersey, after a long illness.

Evelyn was born in Elmont on March 23, 1924 to Rose (Poklop) Prach and Dr. Thomas Prach. She graduated from Bayside High School and the Central Park School of the Arts. She was married to the late Thomas McNamara for 51 years and they were loving parents to six children: Thomas Jr. (Corinne), Pasadena, CA; Barbara Gibson (Gary), Mohnton, PA; Christopher, deceased (Christina) Boulder, CO; Mark (Shani), Merrick, NY; Steven (Lise), West Milford, New Jersey and Defiance, MO; and Richard (Anne), Oyster Bay, NY.

Ian (Mack) MacKenzie, 83, lifelong resident of Oyster Bay, passed away on Saturday, March 31, 2013. Mack was an ex-chief and a 55-year volunteer member of Oyster Bay Fire Company #1. In addition, he was a veteran of the US Army and Navy and was awarded several medals of for his bravery and dedication to his country. He is survived by his loving family, Sharon, Debra, Darren, Douglas and great-uncle to Nikolas Evangeliou. Services Francis P. Devine Funeral Home, 293 South Street, Oyster Bay. Obituary: Hermann C. Schwab

Hermann C. Schwab, known as “Gus” to many, died April 1, 2013 peacefully at his apartment in Manhattan at the age of 93. Born on January 8, 1920 to Hermann C. and Ruth Bliss Schwab, he is survived by his wife of 58 years, Meteer, his children Henry Schwab, Lesley Forman, and Margery Weekes from his prior marriage of 12 years to Lesley Ripley, and his children George Schwab and Tatine Kimmick, as well as thirteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Sadly he was predeceased by his son Stuart Schwab in 2005.

Schwab graduated from St. Mark’s School in 1937 and Yale College in 1941 and served in France during WWII as a second lieutenant. After the war he became a nationally ranked doubles squash player, playing with John Humes until 1969. Schwab served in several positions at Hanover Bank and then Empire Trust Company from 1946 to 1967. In 1967 he joined the Schroder Trust Company, later becoming an officer and director of Schroder Capital Management and Schroder Capital Funds, and of various Schroder mutual funds. He retired from Schroder in 1998 and was named Director Emeritus. He served as the mayor of the Village of Oyster Bay Cove from 1973-1985 and village trustee from 1965-1998. He was a trustee of St. Luke’s Hospital from 1969-1999, as well as treasurer for several years, and oversaw (with many others) its successful merger with Roosevelt Hospital in 1979. For his work at St. Luke’s Hospital, he was honored with an appointment as a Knight of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem.

Ann Farber Schilder, 55, of Great Neck, wife, mother and friend to the community, passed away on Monday, Dec. 17. The cause of death was pancreatic cancer. She died at home, holding the hands of her husband, daughter and son.

“She was a mother, mentor and best friend,” said her son, Bruce Ira Schilder, 27, of Great Neck. “She definitely was the matriarch, even of our extended family.”

Frederick “Pop-Pop” Wright, Sr., was born on April 19, 1914 and died on November 27, 2012. A service of remembrance was held for him on Dec. 4 at the the Hood African American Episcopal Zion Church of Oyster Bay. 

Mr. Wright was born to the late Robert Wright, a WWII veteran and the late Annie Mae Shepherd-Wright, who was a devoted wife. Mr. Wright was born in Philadelphia, PA.

When Mr. Wright was very young his family moved to Oyster Bay. It was then when Frederick, Sr. was united with his grandfather, William “Pop” Shepherd. Frederick was raised in Oyster Bay and attended the Oyster Bay schools. Ending his education in the eighth-grade, as a young adolescent, he took on work to help support the family.


Obituary: Donald E. Jarvis

Donald E. Jarvis passed away at age 88, on November 22, 2012 in Kennesaw, Georgia, with his loving daughter Laurie and her husband Tom, at his side. He was a lifelong resident of East Norwich until December 2006, when he moved to Georgia.

On August 1, 1948 Donald wed Vivian Elizabeth Gossett they were married for 64 years. They had four children: Brenda Downing of Dallas; Donny Jarvis of Bayville; Laurie and Tom Larson of Kennesaw, Georgia; Hewlett Reed Jarvis of Oyster Bay.
