Gregory Allen Race, 53, of Charlotte, NC, passed away on Tuesday, June 11, 2013, at Levine & Dickson Hospice House at Southminster. Visitation was held at Calvary Church in Charlotte. Interment at Magnolia Memorial Gardens at Calvary Church.
Gregory was born on March 19, 1960, in Freeport. Son of Marilyn Race and the late Douglas Race. Gregory attended Helen Keller School for the Blind and was a long time resident and fixture in the Village of Oyster Bay and Cove Neck, NY. Gregory loved spending time with family, especially his nieces and nephews, swimming, talking sports and current events, watching television and ball games (especially the Mets).
David Allen Carl was born June 10, 1951 at Glen Cove Community Hospital. David was sent home to glory on sunrise May 28, 2013.
David was the youngest son of the late Percy Sr. and Geneva Lancaster Carl. He was raised in a household with six older siblings who showed him much love and attention. David was a direct descendant of one of the oldest African American and Native American families in Oyster Bay, and was named after his great-grandfather, David Carl who proudly served with the 26th USCT Regiment in the Civil War from 1864-65. David’s family roots are strongly embedded in the Oyster Bay community as far back as the mid 1700’s to the present as mentioned in the televised show on NBC “Who Do You Think You Are” featuring his celebrity cousin, Vanessa Williams, in February 2011. David was raised with his family and lived most of his life on Carl’s Hill, which was property that his great- grandfather purchased prior to serving in the Civil War and has remained in the family’s possession for approximately 150 years.

Roy Fuchs, chairman of the board of the Friends of Sagamore Hill, passed away the morning of May 12, 2013. Roy W. Fuchs was born in Brooklyn on June 1, 1930, son of Walter and Patricia Quinn Fuchs. He graduated from Valley Stream High School. He earned a college degree from Farmingdale College in Agriculture. He managed a fruit and dairy farm upstate in Elnora, New York for a few years. He was hoping to become a veterinarian when “Uncle Sam” called. He served in the US Navy air control division for eight years. After military duty he became a banker with Franklin National Bank, a savings and loan bank, and Bank Leumi. He married Asenath Hatch in 1963.
Roy Fuchs was a Rotarian (charter president of Plainview Rotary Club and district treasurer). He has been a member of Old First Presbyterian Church of Huntington since 1969, where he served on Session and was a trustee.
Marie Coyle Glass passed away on May 2 at the age of 66. She was the beloved wife of Samuel Glass for 43 years.
Marie Glass was a resident of Centre Island for 35 years. She served her community as Treasurer of the Centre Island Association and a member of the Centre Island Planning Board. She was also a dedicated committee member of the Boys and Girls Club of Oyster Bay — East Norwich.
Francis W. Benner, “Frank”, of Monroe, CT, died Saturday, May 4, 2013, after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. Frank was born in Brooklyn, NY to parents, William and Mary (Siwinski) Benner. He attended Bishop Laughlin HS and Manhattan College. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War from 1969 to 1971 in both Saigon and Cambodia as a translator. Returning from the war, Frank graduated at the top in his class from Fordham Law School. After a career start in NYC, he moved to the Bridgeport area, where he has been a practicing attorney for the past 20 years. Frank was an avid NY Yankee fan, having worked in the old stadium to pay for college.
Gretchen S, Souther peacefully at home in Lattingtown on May 3, 2013 surrounded by family. Beloved wife of Eugene, cherished mother of Kirsten Valt and Karena Johnson. Loving sister of Helen Rodenkirchen (Hans), beloved aunt of Kristina Lacy (Will) and Karalyn Stein (Joseph) and their children Quinn and Gavin Lacy and Christoph Stein. Also survived by her husband’s caring six children and twenty grandchildren as well as her devoted Golden Retrievers Challa and Kyna. Gretchen and her Golden Retriever therapy dog Cormac worked assiduously for months after 9/11/01 bringing comfort to victims’ families and rescue workers at the family assistance center and at Ground Zero.
