Sagamore Hill Prepares to Put Its Collection Into Storage
Just how do you pack an African Cape Buffalo head when it is part of the historic Sagamore Hill National Park site collection? Theodore Roosevelt’s Sagamore Hill home will undergo a $6.2 million rehabilitation beginning in spring 2012. The three year project will give the home a comprehensive interior and exterior rehabilitation of its architectural and structural elements, from its roof to the foundation and for that work to begin – the house needs to be cleared and the collection put in storage.
Firemen’s Field Overhaul Scheduled for 2012 Budget
Oyster Bay Civic Association Hamlet Update
Oyster Bay Civic Association (OBCA) President Bill Von Novak said the Town of Oyster Bay informed them it will place the improvements to Firemen’s Field into their budget that will be adopted in the fall of 2012. Mr. Von Novak said he and East Norwich Civic Association President Matt Meng; Oyster Bay-East Norwich Chamber of Commerce President Michele Browner; Main Street Association Executive Director Isaac Kremer; Rob Brusca and Phil Blocklyn of the Oyster Bay Historical Society attended a meeting with the town where they were told that work on Firemen’s Field is set for 2013. The parking lot area will be re-designed with landscaping, and a comprehensive drainage system overhaul is planned for this, Phase III of the park renovation.
Oyster Bay Railroad Museum Volunteers Work for Funding
Oyster Festival Booth and ‘Beer and Chocolate Tasting’ Raise Funds for OBRM’s Future
Members of the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum were busy working at their booth at Oyster Festival 28. The event is a major fundraiser for the volunteers – who each gave many hours Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 15 and 16, to meet and greet the public and serve them a delightful menu of foods prepared for them by their partner, Jack Halyard’s American Restaurant Bar and Grill in Oyster Bay.
This is the third year that Bernie DelBello and Mike Ventre of Jack Halyard’s have partnered with the OBRM and supplied their superb crab roll, grilled shrimp, seafood gumbo, and shrimp cocktail for the festival booth.
A Fashion Background for the Harvest Moon Ball November 5
Fashions from the OBHS Collection Exhibit; Wearing History: Women the Force behind Fashion
The current exhibition Oyster Bay Historical Society, Wearing History: Women the Force Behind Fashion is the background to their upcoming Harvest Moon Ball annual fundraiser, on Saturday, Nov. 5, from 7 to 11 p.m. The theme is Harvest Moon, “an elegant evening among friends to revel in the mysteries of the changing season.”
OBHS Curator Yvonne Noonan Cifarelli said that many of the dresses from their collection dating from the 1890s to the 1930s could be worn today. Ms. Cifarelli is planning a great evening for guests. “The Anne Taylor Corporation gave us 100 free necklaces and a beautiful retro dress from their 2012 fall preview to showcase their updated take on an historical “Ann Taylor” shirtdress from the early ’60s.
Raynham Hall Museum Staff Meets, Greets Tall Ship Lynx
The Waterfront and History are at the Heart of the Oyster Festival
History came alive this year at the Western Waterfront Pier as the American Privateer, the Lynx, was greeted by staff members of Raynham Hall Museum who interpret the Townsend family of Oyster Bay, merchants and ship owners. The American Privateer The Lynx, is a replica of a ship that took part in the War of 1812, and was here as part of the Oyster Festival waterfront events.Theresa Skvarla, Raynham Hall Museum assistant director and Steven Waldenburg, education coordinator, dressed in historic costumes, went to meet the Lynx to meet the crew, also dressed in historic outfits. Raynham Hall Museum interprets the Townsend family as it lived in Oyster Bay during colonial and Victorian times.
Screening Fireboats of 9/11 With John J. Harvey Fireboat
Fireboats are part of the Marine Division of the New York City Fire Department and patrol the City’s water ways. Their history is rich, originating back to 1864 when the first fireboat, the John Fuller, was put into service. Even then, New York was the shipping hub and center of business for the western world. By this time the Industrial Age was in full swing, and the ports of NYC were full of vessels, merchandise and danger from the cargo that these ships carried.
Oyster Festival Attracts Over 205,000 Visitors
Over 35 Not for Profits Will Spend Their Earnings with the Community
People will be asking “Were you there?” at the 29th Oyster Festival. You probably can just say, of course, – with a record breaking 205,000 attending. The weather was perfect. Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park looked great with new landscaping adding to the ambiance.
It was a win-win day for the over 25 not-for-profits that served food at the Tom Reardon Memorial Food Court.
OB Haunted House Museum Paranormal Events October 29
Paranormal discussion and haunted history tours for teens to adults
Raynham Hall Museum, considered by some to be one of the most haunted places on Long Island, has a tradition of celebrating the supernatural. On Saturday, Oct. 29 from 7 to 10 p.m., the museum, located at 20 West Main Street in Oyster Bay, welcomes Shawn Schildgen, metaphysical and paranormal specialist, to conduct a “how to ghost hunt” investigation. Shawn has been actively working in the paranormal field for the last 16 years and has most recently worked with the paranormal group S.I.G.H.T. (Suffolk Investigative Ghost Hunting Team).

Exhibition: Wearing History: Women the Force behind Fashion
The Oyster Bay Historical Society is exhibiting women’s fashion from their collection dating from the 1890s to the 1930s. The title of the exhibition is Wearing History: Women the Force Behind Fashion. The opening reception will be held on Oct. 20 in their recently completed new building. The Oyster Bay Historical Society’s growing collection of irreplaceable historical artifacts is now able to be housed in The Koenig Center through the generous donations by our President, Frank Leone, our members and patrons, and in particular the Dolan Foundation.
