Locust Valley

The Locust Valley Central School District is hosting "back to school tours" for senior citizens throughout the community on Thursday and Friday, April 23 and 24. The district will provide transportation, breakfast and a tour of their respective elementary intermediate schools. Seniors will also participate in a question and answer session and according to Bayville Principal Nora Friedman and LVI Principal JoAnn Grim, the guests will be given a special reminder of their day from the students!

Superintendent Dr. Anthony Singe and Board President Gary Goodman said, "Senior citizens are a very important part of our community. Senior citizen days give us the opportunity to show them first hand the solid curriculum and nurturing environment in which our youngsters learn in the Locust Valley Central School District. We hope this is the first in a series of such days that will continue annually."

The tours are being sponsored by the Board of Education in cooperation with both schools' staff, parent council and students. The seniors will also be greeted by the middle school and high school principals, Dr. LaVerne Flowers and Edward Tronolone.

Those seniors from Locust Valley will be picked up at the parking lot across from Britton Hardware between 9 and 9:15 a.m. on Thursday, April 23, are expected to arrive at Locust Valley Intermediate by 9:30 a.m., and will partake in a continental breakfast and welcome from 9:30 to 10 a.m. A one-hour tour of the school will follow, and will wrap up with student presentations and a Q & A session. The bus will depart at 11:30 a.m.

Bayville seniors will follow the same schedule at Bayville Intermediate on Friday, April 24. The pick-up point will be the parking lot of the Bayville Community Center. For more information, or to notify the district you would like to attend and to arrange for transportation, please call 674-6310. Reservations must be made in advance.

Congratulation to Erin Fitzgerald, a student at Locust Valley High School for her performance during the 1997-98 winter sports program.

Ms. Fitzgerald earned All County in the Gymnastics Club Division. She won 1st in Balance Beam and 2nd - All Around.

She is the New York State Qualifier All Around.

A group of parents and teachers recently took part in the "Parents As Readers" program modeled after the "Teachers As Readers" district in-service course. Led by librarians Chris Weil, Jacquie Galano and kindergarten teacher Lori Duvall, the home-school connection was strengthened through book talks. Participants shared reflections about many books available to children. The forum encourages the same focus that the New York State Learning Standards for English/Language Arts has established for children at the elementary level.
