It has been a long cold winter. On Saturday, March 14 there was the promise of Spring in the air and an excitement of another nature as well. The Oyster Bay High School Boys Basketball Team returned to SUNY Old Westbury, the site of their Long Island Championship win, to face off against the Vikings of Valhalla in the New York State Southeast Regional Championship.
Valhalla fans packed the visitors' bleachers and the Vikings came well prepared. Valhalla knew that to beat the Baymen, they would have to key in on the offensive attack of Bryan Van Cott, who has scored over 1000 points in his high school career. The Vikings were successful in this regard as they were able to contain Van Cott and held him to single digit scoring.
However, the Baymen showed themselves to be team champions. CJ Durrant and Brett Restrepo stepped up and delivered 23 and 22 points respectively leading the Baymen to a 68 to 62 victory and a trip to the New York State final four championship on Friday and Saturday, March 20 and 21 in the Glens Falls' Civic Center. Game time was 1 p.m. on both days.
The big story on Friday, reported Tom Gould, OBEN Media Communications Specialist who attended the game said, "OB out powered at the States".
The Baymen fought on against Avon's height and balanced scoring with the result that in the final tally of the Friday game, it was Avon 61 OB 45. The Avon High School team went on to win the championship. "The Baymen were beaten by the best," said Mr. Gould.
Still it was a great season for the Baymen and one to be remembered proudly at future reunions! Four of the players are seniors.
