On Tuesday evening, March 10, the Oyster Bay High School Varsity Boys Basketball Team faced off against the Royals of Port Jefferson in the Long Island Class 'C' Championship Game. Both teams came to play and from the tip off the pace was fast and furious.
Port Jefferson's John Nielsen was awesome, sinking shot after shot on his way to scoring 28 points in the game. Oyster Bay found themselves fighting to keep pace with the blistering attack of the Royals. At one point the Baymen trailed by as many as 11 points. The Baymen showed real drive and determination. They did not get discouraged and never gave up. They maintained a balanced team offense and kept an aggressive defensive pressure from buzzer to buzzer, often applying the full court press.
Bryan Van Cott, who has been the team's leading scorer all season, showed that he was the "go to guy" in the clutch as he led the team in scoring with 24 points. With the game on the line and 5.3 seconds left on the clock, Bryan delivered the game winning jumper as the ball sailed through the hoop.
The Baymen had no time to celebrate their championship as they immediately began to prepare for the Regional Championship game which found the boys back on the court of SUNY Old Westbury on Saturday, March 14 at 5 p.m.
The Baymen faced off against the Vikings of Valhalla in the New York State Southeast Regional Championship and showed themselves to be team champions with a 68 to 62 victory. They are set for the New York State final four championship on Friday and Saturday, March 20 and 21 in the Glens Falls Civic Center. Game time will be 1 p.m. on both days. Go Baymen!
