Sydney Holmes Bales, of Locust Valley, died on Feb. 21, 2009 at age 86. Wife of the late William A. Mother of Peter R. and William A. Jr. (Gioia). Grandmother of Keegan, Ryan, Caroline, Melissa and Dylan. Arrangements made by Dodge-Thomas Funeral Home, Glen Cove. Service at St. John's of Lattingtown. Interment private. Paul Ceglia, lifelong resident of Locust Valley, died on Feb. 28, 2009 at age 79. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran. Husband of the late Lorraine A. Father of Paul Alan, Glen and Laurel Fagiola. Brother of Arnold, Evelyn Mercadante, Doris and Angelo. Grandfather of six. Reposed at the Funeral Home of Dodge-Thomas, Glen Cove. Interment private.

Thomas K. Harkins, a former resident of Mattituck, died at St. Catherine of Sienna Medical Center in Smithtown on March 2, 2009. He was 61 years old. Tom was born in Jackson Heights, Queens, on May 31, 1947 to Thomas J. and Katherine (nee Gillespie) Harkins. He was a graduate of St. Dominic's School in Oyster Bay and a U.S. Army veteran.

Formerly of Oyster Bay and Massapequa, he moved to Shelter Island in the late 1990s when he became associated with the DeFriest family and the Shelter Island Funeral Home. He later moved to Mattituck and continued his association with the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Homes until his retirement three years ago.

"Tom will be deeply missed by the DeFriest and Grattan families. We are grateful for his friendship and dedication to funeral service and for the care and comfort he brought to the families we serve," said Joe Grattan Jr. Surviving are his sister Patricia A. Mattson of Barnard, VT, and Pinehurst, NC; and a niece Jeanne Kennie of Cape Cod, MA.

The family received friends at the DeFriest-Grattan in Mattituck where religious services were conducted by the Rev. George Gaffga. Interment Our Lady of Grace RC Cemetery, Bantam, CT.

Dylan M. Waller, of Muttontown, passed away on March 4, 2009, at 7 months old. Son of Sheryl and David. Little brother of Marissa. Grandson of Alba Santana and the late Eugenio, and Arline and Donald Waller. Nephew of Gene Santana. Also survived by relatives and friends. Arrangements were made by Oyster Bay Funeral Home. Richard G. Peterson, of Oyster Bay, passed away on March 5, 2009, at the age of 85. Husband of Elizabeth. Also survived by many other relatives and friends. He served in the Army during WW II. Arrangements were made by Oyster Bay Funeral Home. Interment Calverton National Cemetery. Harold Porter Buck, of Wantagh, passed away on March 6, 2009, at the age of 71. Father of Harold Jr., and Stephen (Carolyn), sons of Ellen Buck. Grandpa and Pop-Pop of Marissa, Kristin, Stephen Jr., Michael and Jack. Brother of Susannah and Dorothy. Companion of Robin Frenzel. Employee of Grumman Aerospace for 31 years. Arrangements were made by Oyster Bay Funeral Home. A private family service will be held. Harold's family has requested donations in his name to Destroyer Escort Historical Museum, USS Slater DE-766, PO Box 1926 Albany, NY 12201-1926, www.Ussslater.org. Scott D. Miller, of Oyster Bay, passed away on March 10, 2009, at the age of 36, of Oyster Bay. Husband of Evelyn. Father of Joseph, Siobhan, and Nicholas. Son of Edward and Carole Miller. Brother of Dean (Denise), and William Murray (Maria). Also survived by nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Arrangements were made by Oyster Bay Funeral Home. Funeral Mass St. Dominic RC Church. Mother of Hank, Christina, Lisa and Tory. Grandmother of Melissa and Christopher. Great grandmother of five. An active member of the Catholic Daughters of the America's for 56 years. Arrangements were made by Oyster Bay Funeral Home. Funeral Mass St. Dominic RC Chapel. Interment Holy Rood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers th e family is requesting donations to St. Judes Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Leo J. Gugerty, Jr., of Locust Valley, passed away on March 11, 2009, at the age of 81. Husband of Helen (nee Merrill). Father of Leo III (Linda), Merrill, Brian (Kathy), David (Helene) and Paul (Lisa). Grandfather of Sean, Ryan, Emma, Grace, Paige, Dylan, Tighe, Anna and Jane. A veteran of WW II and the Korean War. Arrangements were made by Oyster Bay Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Paul The Apostle RC Church. Interment will be at Locust Valley Cemetery.
