Congratulations to the Oyster Bay High School Girls Basketball Team on winning the Nassau County "C" Championship. The girls' were scheduled to play in the Small School Championship on Saturday, Feb. 28 at CW Post against Malverne. Tip off is scheduled at noon. The girls will also play in the Long Island Championship on March 10 at CW Post. Oyster Bay will take on the girls of Stony Brook. Game time is 4 p.m.
Head Coach Dave Stein says that the road to the championship was "truly a team effort in every sense of the word." The offense was led by Isabelle Mirman, Keri Bongiovanni, and Joshlyn Grant although Coach Stein points out that the girls run an unselfish offense. If another girl is open and has a better shot the ball will go to that player. The defense was led by Jazzmyne Sangster and Jen Cappozoli. The girls posted a regular season record of 16 wins and 2 losses. With the two post season wins to date the girls have a rare and impressive 18 wins in a single season.
Coach Stein attributes a great deal of the girls' success to the fact the girls are a team on and off the court. Julia Warren, who began the season on the Junior Varsity squad, was brought up to join the Varsity squad including Keri Bongiovanni, Katie Bonilla, Jen Cappozoli, Stephanie Damiani, Joshlyn Grant, Isabelle Mirman, Victoria Principe, Jazzmyne Sangster, and Melissa Tiyaloglu. Coach Stein rounds out his coaching staff with Nicole Cochrane and Erin Egan. Trainer Nadege Casseus ensures the girls are able to perform at their best.
