Congratulations to Zachary Vlacich, of East Norwich a 3rd grader at the Vernon School, and his LI Gulls hockey team who were champions of the prestigious International Silver Sticks hockey tournament the weekend of Jan. 24 and 25, in St. Claire Shores, MI. They defeated teams from America and Canada on their way to the championship game against their nemesis, the Minutemen Flames from Boston, MA.

The Gulls defeated their rivals 4-0 for the first time this year and on the biggest stage possible! Zachary scored the 2nd of the 4 goals and contributed to the total team effort.

As Champions of the International tournament, the LI Gulls are the best "Mite" team in North America. Quite a feat for an ice hockey team from LI!

The Silver Stick Tournaments were created to bring together for competition the best youth hockey teams in North America and to promote citizenship and international goodwill through hockey.

More than 70,000 skaters annually participate in Regional Qualifying Tournaments.

These tournaments are played across North America, as far west as San Jose, California, south to Dallas, Texas and Huntsville, Alabama, east to Bridgeport, Connecticut and north to Sudbury, Ontario. __Champions from these tournaments are invited to advance and play other champions in International Finals Tournaments.

The LI Gulls Mite AAA are an all 2000 birth year elite travel team based in Syosset. These 15 kids were selected from a try-out pool of over 40 and are mostly from Nassau County and one member is from Queens.

They qualified for the International tournament by being runners-up in the regional tournament, to the Minutemen Flames! The Gulls have a small history with the Minutemen Flames this season. They played them four times this year and lost four close, hard-fought games. The International Championship game was a re-match of their regional championship game from October, which they lost in overtime. It's quite a feat to be the champions of the most prestigious tournament that these kids can play in, but to do it in the manner that they did is even more special. Logo
