Joseph F. Geraghty, of Tarpon Springs, Florida and Bayville, a North Shore Realtor, appointed in 1972 as Director of the Bureau of Real Estate and Insurance, passed away on October 12, 2008. Mr. Geraghty, was instrumental in the sale of surplus county property to the public. His marketing strategies and effective advertising, resulted in more people purchasing properties at above market value, bringing greater revenue to the Nassau County taxpayers.
Prior to his appointment to the county, Mr. Geraghty entered into the ß∑real estate business in Bayville. He joined the Long Island Board of Realtors together with Realtor Walter J. Smith of Glen Head, establishing ß∑the first Nassau North Shore Chapter of the Multiple Listing Service.
His board activities resulted in his holding many board officer positions, and in 1965 he became the president of the Long Island Board of Realtors. After his term as President, he managed the board's activities as its executive vice president for two years.
After retiring from Nassau County in 1984, he and his wife of 46 years, Marcella, spent part time in Tarpon Springs, Florida, and summers in Bayville. Marcella passed away in 1990. Joseph married Madeline O'Connell in 1991. Upon Madeline's death in 2005 they had been married 15 years. Joe is survived by his son, Brian (Donna) of Seymour, Connecticut, and his daughter, Patricia (Robert) Geraghty Forte of East Rockaway, New York.
He was the grandfather of Bridget, Michelle, Megan, Gary, Jennifer, and John. Brother of Vincent P. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, as well as his stepchildren, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren from Joseph's marriage to Madeline. He was an honorably discharged WWII veteran with the Navy Seabees. Retired FDNY 1961, former real estate agent, and operator of Geraghty Real Estate Agency. Past president of Bayville Chamber of Commerce, 61-year member of the K of C and 4th Degree Knight, St. Gertrude's Holy Name Society, Bayville American Legion. Visitation was at the Francis P. DeVine Funeral Home Inc. on Thursday. The Funeral Mass was held on Friday morning at St. Gertrude's R.C. Church of which he was a lifelong member. Interment followed at the Bayville Cemetery.
