Veterans Are Often Ordinary People Who Accomplish Extraordinary Things

Veterans Day, Nov. 11, was celebrated in Oyster Bay in front of Town Hall West, where the war memorials are located. Members of the Quentin Roosevelt Post #4 American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8033 together honored those who served in all wars. The time chosen, the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, commemorates the signing of the Armistice ending World War I. Originally called Armistice Day, on May 24, 1954 it became Veterans Day, by an act of Congress.

Peg Wallace of Christina’s Epicure has been having wild turkey sightings, in back of the gourmet store on Route 106, off 25A in East Norwich. “Are they protesting the upcoming holiday perhaps, or maybe they saw the sign that said fresh turkey. One has even roosted in one of our shopping carts,” she said. Ms. Wallace sent photos of the lady turkeys walking up to the entrance of the store. “I’ve even seen some male turkeys,” she said.

The Nassau Hiking and Outdoor Club (NHOC), which meets regularly at the Eisenhower Park Special Events Center, and frequently hosts hikes through the park, has just returned from its annual weekend trip to Montauk.

From Oct. 23-25 the NHOC club members stayed at the beautiful Ocean Beach Resort. Hikes included a 4-5 mile hike around Big Reed Pond, Quadam’s Hill and Oyster Pond; a 6-7 mile hike from Camp Hero to the lighthouse and back, a 5-6 mile hike around Fresh Pond and a one mile hike in the Famous Walking Dunes.

The First Annual “Kyle’s Heroes – Walk for Down Syndrome Awareness” was held on Saturday, Nov. 7 at Theodore Roosevelt Park. Oyster Bay Town Councilman Anthony Macagnone was on hand to present a town citation and to congratulate Ty and Diane Jimenez, who created Kyle’s Heroes and named it in honor of their 2-year-old son Kyle Jimenez, who has Down Syndrome.
