On Sunday, Aug. 31 (rain date Sept. 1), Oyster Bay High School Students will swim across Oyster Bay Cove to raise funds for the Long Island Volunteer Center (LIVC) and Brain Aneurysm Center of North Shore University Hospital. Organized as a Newsday Future Corps project by Bayville resident, Joan Imhof, the swim represents a triumph as well as a philanthropic opportunity. Ms. Imhof, who manages the Newsday program and leads the LIVC as its president and founder, survived a sub-arachnoid hemorrhage two years ago Labor Day weekend.
More than 50 swimmers and volunteers are expected for the event to bring awareness to the importance of community activism.
The Long Island Volunteer Center, serving Nassau and Suffolk Counties, is an affiliate of HandsOn Network, a national nonprofit, that connects 370 civic hubs managing millions of volunteers and thousands of volunteer-driven community impact projects annually across the country.
