Opinion

We are letting the words of Rob Brusca, said at the Oyster Bay Civic Association meeting on July 17, do the editorial work for us.

Rob Brusca reported on the work of the Main Street Association Design Committee chaired by Ellen Roché. He credited the committee for adding interesting details to the building that runs down South Street, north of Snouder's Corner Drugstore to the Coin Gallery corner. The committee is looking into putting in three bike racks; one at the alleyway south of Townsend Square; one at the Derby-Hall bandstand; by the kiosk on East Main Street, off the parking lot entrance.

He said they are also looking into head-in parking on Spring Street which could add 10 parking spaces.

Mr. Brusca credited Chuck and Carla Panetta for spending a lot of time on the project.

Mr. Brusca also complimented the Panettas for working in conjunction with the property owner on the site south of the old "Leatherman" building. "They have done a lot of work there and it is a substantial improvement," he said. They removed the trailer that has been there for a long time, and generally neatened up the area.

Mr. Brusca complimented plumber Eric Schebrlien for doing a great job on the building south of the Hess Station on Pine Hollow Road. He put in a retaining wall in back and is improving the area - "So Eric deserves credit, too," he said.

When he mentioned the plan to clean up the triangle area where the Busy Bee was located and to install the equestrine statue of TR, the listeners applauded. "The town deserves the credit," said Mr. Brusca.

He also mentioned the town's new tree ordinance, for which credit goes to the Save the Jewel By the Bay group.

We want to compliment the Schaeffer Agency of West Main Street for the lovely front design of its building. The ochre walls and the stunning black awnings enhance the building beautifully.

We also drove around the hamlet enjoying all the plants that have been set out. It is a lovely hamlet and you all have been doing a great job.

Applaud yourselves!

And...

At the meeting, Stan Spiegelman complimented Rob Brusca on the community calendar he is doing for the community on a biweekly basis. The calendar is an outreach into the community to inform them of events in the area - just as the meetings inform members on what is happening in the community. You can send your email address to RTC58@aol.com and you can ask to be added to the list.

While it began as notices to members of the ENCA and the OBCA, it has expanded its scope in the community.

We find it a great reminder of where to be and at what time.

Thanks Rob for being a great community member. - DFK
