How Well Do You Know the Area? Do you know where this week’s picture was taken? If you do, call the Enterprise-Pilot at 747-8282 and let us know. If you have a picture that you think might be interesting for others to guess, drop it off in our box at Raynham Hall Museum, 20 East Main St., Oyster Bay.

Caroline S. DuBois, spokesman for the Coalition to Save Firemen's Field instantly recognized the June 5 mystery photo. It is the 1952 bronze plaque over the door of the concrete stadium at War Memorial Field she said. It states:

"Through the generosity of those who

Donated the land, those who gave their services,

And with the cooperation of the citizens of

Oyster Bay, these recreation facilities

Have been made possible.

Oyster Bay War Memorial Committee

Robert De Graff, chairman

Board of Education

Dwight S. Bishop, president

W. Porter Buck

Dominic J. Massa

David Bernstein

Truman A. Rogers

Clarence C. Combs, architect."

Ms. DuBois pointed out that at the same time the War Memorial Committee (mentioned above) donated the land for that playing field, they simultaneously donated the 3.5 acre parking field across the street from the stadium to the town. This lot, adjacent to the train station (now called Firemen's Field), was originally intended by the committee to be solely used for parking for the War Memorial Athletic Field, the Long Island Rail Road Commuters and general parking. Today, this valuable open space is the very controversial location proposed for a new Theodore Roosevelt Museum and Parking Garage.

Billy Minicozzi guessed the location was a building at the Jakobson Shipyard. On a sport note he said the Mets lost all four games to the San Diego Padres, this past weekend. And, he added, the Bayville Firemen are having a cruise around NYC this Friday. Bon voyage! And, speaking of Bayville, the entire strip opposite Ransom Beach had no electricity on Sunday, June 8. Doors were open and restaurateurs sat inside telling customers what had happened. By Monday their power was back - to everyone's delight.

We received a call from Richard Oakes who also correctly identified the picture in the May 29 issue showing the Oyster Bay Water District on Cruise Night. Mr. Oakes, a Bayville resident says he regularly attends the Tuesday night car show on Audrey Avenue. Although he doesn't own an antique car, he said, "I should get one. It brings you back to when you were 18." Mr. Oakes enjoyed Bay Day at the WaterFront Center. He said he walked around and had a crab cake, and enjoyed the day.
